Now in its 12th year, the Associated Builders and Contractors San Diego Craft Championship Competition tests the skills of the best of the best. The competition emphasizes the important role craft skills training plays in construction, by evaluating contestants’ knowledge of their craft as well as their skill and talent.

Contestants must first successfully complete hundreds of hours of classroom training and thousands of hours of practical field experience to be eligible for competition at the local level. San Diego champions move on to the national competition to be held this year in Birmingham, Alabama.
The San Diego ABC Apprenticeship Program has a long tradition of national winners having won 12 medals in the last 11 years. Sheet metal apprentice Jason McElveny won the bronze medal in last year’s competition, the second year in a row a San Diegan has won in the sheet metal craft category.

In addition, there will be a special “Block Kids” competition for kids in grades one through six. Block Kids will challenge students to test their creative building skills with snap-together block kits. There will be prizes for the best projects and the winning project moves on to regional competition. The Block Kids competition is sponsored by the San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). Kids interested in participating in the Block Kids competition must pre-register no later than November 26 as space is limited to 30 contestants. Contact Teran Breceda for Block Kids registration forms at 858-349-6557 or email

Media coverage is invited. Competitors and judges will be available for interviews. For admittance into the competition, please check in with ABC San Diego staff on arrival.

The public is also welcome to come watch the competition.
