New Methods Can Help Defeat Cellulite This Summer

New research breakthroughs offer options for treating this common problem

(San Diego) -
It’s like something out of a summer horror movie for many women: cellulite. Even a superhero can’t save you. Ninety percent of all women have cellulite, and the other 10 percent think they do. Cellulite defined as deposits of fat and fibrous tissue that causes unsightly dimpling of the skin, the so-called “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” look. Although a health diet and exercise can help, a woman can also be at an ideal weight or even on the slim side and still have this unattractive dimpling of fat on her arms, abdomen, knees, thighs and buttocks.

“You can't 'cure' a woman of cellulite, because she needs this stored fat for pregnancy and lactation," says Mitchel Goldman, M.D., clinical professor of dermatology at UCSD and Medical Director of GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology. “But the good news is that research is spurring new treatments that are producing exciting results for many women, including right here in San Diego.”

One of the most promising treatments is currently being testing through Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clinical trials at GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology. The TriActiveII™ System (a laser suctioning cooling device). This laser technology firms your skin by boosting collagen while softening and flattening the fatty tissue.

In the original FDA clinical trials done by Dr. Goldman, the TriActive™ System achieved visible results in 100 percent of patients; 75 percent of them saw their dimples reduced by 50 percent or more.

How does the Tri-Active™ System work? As you lie on a table, a technician passes the device over your target areas. The sensation is like getting a relaxing massage. Best results are achieved after two months of weekly treatments. Dermatologists recommend that you get maintenance treatments at two-month intervals.

In addition, liposculpture in combination with the Tri-Active™ System can help achieve excellent results. Smart Lipo MPX™ and Cool Lipo™ are laser assisted forms of liposculpture that Dr. Goldman helped develop and personally tested at La Jolla Spa MD. They are minimally invasive and cause the minimum possible discomfort and downtime.

Goldman combines liposculpture procedures with Tri-Active™ for optimal results. The Tri-Active helps smooth the treated areas as well as promote healing.

Both Cool Lipo™ and Smart Lipo MPX™ are safe and effective. Which one works better? Clinical studies are presently being performed to see if there is a unique advantage of one system over the other. At this time there is no proof that one method is better than the other. These treatments are "color blind" and can be used on all skin types, ages, shapes and colors.

“If you’ve got cellulite and it bothers you but you haven’t been happy with your options in the past, check into the latest technology. You might find a solution that’s right for you now,” said Goldman.
