San Diego’s “Green Roof Guy” Passes the Test
Jim Mumford of GreenScaped Buildings First to Pass Green Roof Professional Accreditation Exam
(San Diego) – San Diego has its first accredited Green Roof Professional. Jim Mumford, owner of GreenScaped Buildings, successfully passed the brand new Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Exam run by the industry’s trade association, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC). The exam was administered for the first time in June at the 7th Annual International Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mumford was one of 130 conference delegates from across the United States to complete the newly launched Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Exam, with 109 passing. The test covered the key areas of knowledge expected of a Green Roof Professional and encompassed five areas of concentration including pre-design, design, contract management, quality assurance and support, and maintenance. GRP accreditation will verify the designated GRP has attained a level of the interdisciplinary knowledge needed in the design, installation and maintenance of green roof systems.
Green roofs bring roofing and engineering professionals, with their knowledge of drainage, waterproofing and structural support, together with landscapers, growing medium specialists, horticulturalists and landscape architects. Many associated industry partners and subject matter experts provided GRHC with information on which the exam was based, including the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), green roof industry members and other roofing associations.
“I’m proud to be part of this new professional community, upholding standards that consumers can count on when looking for a green roof professional to oversee their projects. Installing a green roof is a commitment. It’s important to me that I demonstrate my own commitment to the highest quality projects possible, and accreditation as a Green Roof Professional is one way to do it.” said Mumford.
“GRHC deserves a lot of credit for putting this program together,” said Mumford, who has already begun preparing for his next designation, LEED AP. “I’m passionate about the many benefits of green roofs and it’s important to pursue best practices in design, installation and

maintenance. In my opinion, the best way to become a leader in the industry and to gain the trust of the community is to meet (and exceed!) the qualifications set by industry experts.”
