Dr. Steven Oppenheim Named One of San Diego’s “Top Docs” for 2009
The only hospice and palliative medicine physician awarded in this field
(San Diego) - Steven Oppenheim, MD, has been selected by his peers as a recipient of the prestigious San Diego Physicians of Exceptional Excellence or “Top Doctors” Award for 2009. Dr. Oppenheim was the only hospice and palliative medicine specialist named to the list this year.
Award recipients are nominated and selected by their peers who are members of the San Diego County Medical Society. Physicians are asked to whom they would send a family member who needed a specialist in their field, and were allowed to nominate physicians outside their specialty.
Dr. Oppenheim is Clinical Medical Director at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine, providing physician services on home hospice teams as well as working countless hours serving as a consultant on palliative care issues to many of the County’s area hospitals. In addition, Dr. Oppenheim is Chair of the Institutional Review Board hosted by The Institute for Palliative Medicine, which protects the rights and welfare of research participants.

Dr. Charles von Gunten, Provost of The Institute for Palliative Medicine in is in charge of all education and research programs at The Institute and applauds Dr. Oppenheim’s recognition in the field of palliative medicine.

Dr. Oppenheim is highly esteemed among physicians in our community and by our Institute faculty,” said Dr. von Gunten. “I am thrilled that the members of the San Diego County Medical Society recognize Dr. Oppenheim’s talents and contributions to patients and families in the field of hospice and palliative medicine.”
Dr. Oppenheim serves as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCSD School of Medicine. He is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He also is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). Dr. Oppenheim was awarded the United Way/CHAD “Health Hero” Award in 2004, for his work in helping to relieve pain and for promoting quality of life for those living with chronic or serious illness.
Dr. Oppenheim received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Chemistry from Claremont McKenna College, and a Masters of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from UCLA. He completed his MD degree at USC and Internal Medicine Residency training in 1986 at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California.
