Maggie Watkins Elected 2012 Board Chairperson
Seasoned professional services executive and community leader assumes role at pivotal time

(San Diego) – Maggie T. Watkins, Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer of Best Best & Krieger LLP and former Vice Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association of San Diego/Imperial Board of Directors has been elected Chairperson for 2012. Watkins brings impressive professional accomplishments and contributions to the San Diego community to her new role.


"I look forward to continuing the fine work that outgoing board Chair Eugenia Welch has done,” said Watkins. “Along with Interim Executive Director Gail Levin, they have laid a strong foundation for the organization for 2012. Alongside our entire team, I am dedicated to raising the visibility of the Alzheimer's Association in San Diego, expanding the Board of Directors, increasing partnerships with key organizations and seeking new revenue sources.

“As we confront the aging population of Baby Boomers, we must redouble our efforts to find effective treatments and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease now,” said Watkins.

Watkins has more than 25 years of experience as a seasoned professional services executive with strategic planning, marketing, public relations, communications, community relations, sales and business development, and client relations expertise. She has tenure with a large regional law firm and several local and international accounting and insurance firms.

In her role with Best Best & Krieger LLP , a California based law firm with nine offices, Watkins is responsible for all of the firm’s marketing, business development and communications initiatives.

In addition to her role with the Alzheimer’s Association, the region’s leading organization for Alzheimer’s support and research, Watkins is an active volunteer in professional and community organizations. On a national level, she was a past president of the Law Marketing Association (LMA) and the Association of Accounting Marketing (AAM). She has served as board chair for the Peninsula YMCA, Women in Business – San Diego Chapter, Republican Businesswomen and The East County Performing Arts Center. She has served on the boards of LEAD San Diego, Corporate Directors Forum, Girl Scouts, The American Heart Association, Project Concern International, and The Arthritis Foundation. She currently sits on the boards of Leadership California and the International Bipolar Foundation.

Watkins’ numerous honors including the San Diego Business Journal's “Women Who Mean Business”; San Diego’s 10 “Coolest Women” by Girl Scouts and was one of San Diego Magazine's "50 People to Watch."

A frequent speaker, Watkins regularly addresses management, professional and non-profit groups on a variety of topics. She is a graduate of University of California, Los Angeles.

Also elected to the Executive Committee with Watkins are Bob Schlax, Treasurer; Alice Campbell, Secretary; and Eugenia Welch, Past Chair.

At large board members for 2012 include: Bari L. Berkman, Pat Brown, Elizabeth Chennamchetty, John Daly, MD, Paul Mosher, Herb Schnall, and Crystal Watkins.

Alzheimer’s disease is the third leading cause of death in adults in San Diego and Imperial Counties. It one of the fastest growing diseases in the United States. Fifty-three thousand San Diegans and Imperial County residents and their families are affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

The mission of the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
