Your Face Isn’t the Place to Go Bargain Shopping
Consumers get the best treatment at the right price by shopping smart

(San Diego) - Everyone is tightening up their budget these days. What smart consumer wouldn’t try to get a bargain when possible, right?

It’s hard not to be tempted to try and save money on popular cosmetic dermatology and surgery procedures such as laser treatments, liposuction, schlerotherapy (vein) treatments, or Botox® and dermal fillers like Juvaderm™, Restalyne® or Evolence®. Advertisements for clinics offering low prices at clinics that seem respectable are hard to resist.

But Dr. Mitch Goldman, Medical Director of GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, is seeing for himself what happens when people are tempted to trust their health and appearance to unqualified practitioners just to save a few dollars.

“This trend is growing and it breaks my heart,” says Goldman. “Too many people are lured by unrealistic promises of miracle treatments with lasers or “new” injectible formulas that not only won’t work, but could make your condition worse – and cause lasting damage.”

“I am increasingly seeing patients who have already spent thousands of dollars on treatments getting ripped off or worse hurt by unscrupulous people who claimed they could deliver some sort of miraculous results. I spend far too much time correcting these substandard treatments. It’s completely unnecessary.”

Goldman says it’s critically important for consumers to look into claims being made about treatments before proceeding. He recommends the following steps:

• Don’t be shy about asking tough questions and requesting credentials and references.

Ethical physicians are eager to share their qualifications. Avoid someone who attended a weekend seminar and set up shop a few months ago.
  • Ask whether treatments are administered by a trained physician, nurse, physician’s assistant, or other trained personnel under the onsite supervision of a physician.
“Patients are often shocked to learn that a physician isn’t required to be present at clinics in California. But if something goes wrong, you need to have an expert right there to supervise, make corrections, and prevent lasting damage or worse,” said Goldman.
  • Be sure your physician uses only FDA approved solutions.
“Some physicians use cheaper mixed formulas with non-approved compounds. You won’t save money in the long run because these solutions don’t work as well. You’ll end up needing additional treatment that costs way more,” advises Goldman.
  • Don’t buy into the hype about one particular laser.
“I have 30 lasers in my practice. There’s a reason for it,” says Goldman. “Different lasers are needed for different conditions. When a practice has just one or two lasers, beware. You’ll be told a particular laser can treat anything and everything. It’s not true.”

“You might end up with ineffective treatment, or treatment that could be too harsh and damage your skin. I have dozens of patients with terrible scarring from inept laser treatments. It’s upsetting to me because it just didn’t need to happen,” said Goldman.
  • Talk with your physician and be realistic about results.
“We’d all like to have wonderful results from one fast, painless treatment, but it takes time and care to achieve lasting, beautiful results customized for each patient’s condition and needs,” says Goldman. “I can’t say it enough: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Pictures can lie these days thanks to technology.”
  • Ask for referrals from current clients.
Talk to actual patients. Ask the right questions. Be skeptical, and seek the best possible care.

“It’s tempting to try and save money in today’s economy, but you only have one face and body to take you through life,” advises Goldman. “Quality care doesn’t mean breaking the bank. It means being smart and getting exactly what you pay for.”
