Friends Don’t Let Friends Get Skin Cancer
GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology offers free skin cancer screenings during May
(San Diego) - More than one million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year, and more than 100,000 people will die from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The good news is that, when caught at its earliest stage, melanoma has an almost 100 percent five-year survival rate.
During Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) and Olay have joined forces for the third year to San Diego County residents free skin cancer screenings through “Skin Cancer Takes Friends,” a program which encourages women to bring their friends to get screened for skin cancer. Dermatologic surgeons nationwide are volunteering their time and expertise to screen patients and their “friends” for free to increase awareness of the risk of skin cancer.
Dr. Mitchel P. Goldman, Medical Director of GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, is a local member of ASDS. Goldman and his team of physicians at GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology will participate in the “Skin Cancer Takes Friends” screening program in May. Screenings are quick and easy – they are noninvasive, visual inspections of the entire body and each takes only two to three minutes.
“Our constant sunshine is one of the biggest reasons people love living in San Diego,” said Goldman. “But it comes at a potentially high price. People don’t always understand that skin cancer can kill. It’s vital to get screened every year, especially in a climate like ours where people are outdoors year round. Early detection means early treatment, and early treatment means a higher possibility of saving lives.”
The incidence of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is rising faster than that of any other cancer. One in five Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. While some are more at risk than others, anyone can develop skin cancer, regardless of skin color, ethnicity, age or geography. The good news is that, when detected and treated early, the disease is almost 100% curable.
Anyone can take advantage of this potentially lifesaving screening exam, but you must call GBK Cosmetic Laser Dermatology to schedule an appointment at 858-459-7011.
